Eastern Huerfano County is mostly open plains with
the Huerfano River and Cuchara River running thru it. Beautiful canyons, rolling foothills, Maria Reservoir and the Cuchara Dam are all located in Eastern Huerfano County. 8,500 really nice people live in the County as per 2000 Census. Elevation is between 14,000 ft at the tip
of Mount Blanca to 5,050 in the eastern plains.
    
The Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range runs North and South thru the West side of the County. San Isabel National Forest, Spanish Peaks, East Mount Blanca Peak, Mount Meastas, Silver Mountain, Greenhorn Mountain, Copper Bull, Slide Mountain are all located in western Huerfano County.

Interstate 25 runs North and South thru the County and State Hwy 160 runs East and West. Hwy 10 comes in from the East and joins I-25 and 160 in Walsenburg. Pueblo County borders on the North, Custer County on the Northwest, Costilla County on the West and Las Animas County is our neighbor to the South.
    
Walsenburg is the County Seat of Huerfano County. The Courthouse is located on Main and 5th Street. Built in 1905, the Stone was taken from a local quarry. Huerfano Butte after which the County was named lies North of Walsenburg, off I-25.

We are 160 miles south of Denver and about 60 miles north of the New Mexico state line. Public airfields for small aircraft are located in La Veta and Walsenburg. The nearest commercial Airport is 80 miles North in Colorado Springs.
